Over time, concrete floors can settle unevenly or become uneven due to cracking and moisture. Whether you want to repair an uneven floor or add a new flooring on top of the existing concrete floor, you need to level the concrete floor.
Grinding
If there are only a few problem areas in the concrete, you can mechanically flatten them by grinding, bead-blasting, or abrading. When use a grinder to grind down any particularly high spots, remember to wear eye protection and a face mask. Start grinding, you need to lay the disc flat against the spot and move it in a side to side or front to back motion until you grind the bump down to floor level. After grinding down all the spots, vacuum up the dust with a vacuum cleaner.
Self-leveling Compound
If the entire slab is uneven, you may have to use a self-leveling concrete compound to smooth it out. The self-leveling compound works well when you are leveling the concrete floor. It is designed to spread out evenly with the force of gravity. You can spread it out on the floor and make sure to get all the way into the corners and along the edges of the room. With this type of substance, you can apply it with a trowel and spread it evenly over the floor. Then you will need to let it dry completely.
If you want to install tile or other hard-surfaced flooring on top of the concrete, you need to wait until floor can be walked on after 4 hours. If you want to install carpet flooring, you have better to wait at least 16 hours. Certainly, drying time can vary depending on temperature and humidity.
