How to Make Terrazzo Floors Shine

Terrazzo floors combine chips of marble and other types of stones with cement to form a substantial flooring surface. They are sensitive and porous when not sealed correctly. However, with properly cleaning and polishing, terrazzo floors can maintain a brilliant shine and elegant look. To protect your floor and minimize the risk of damage, choosing supplies and equipment designed specifically for polishing and cleaning terrazzo. 

Here are a few tips on keeping your terrazzo floor shine.

1. Clean the floor with a damp mop to remove dirt before polishing. Mix a PH-neutral terrazzo tile cleaner and water according to the manufacturer's instructions. And then apply this mixture to clean the entire terrazzo tile surface. Make sure to use a soft mop to avoid any scratches.  

    

2. Continue mopping until all dirt and dust have been removed. Let your terrazzo floor dry completely before walking on it or placing any furniture back on top of it.

    

3. When your are satisfied that your terrazzo floor is completely cleaned, apply a terrazzo or marble sealer to your floor. Pour the sealer in a bucket, then apple it with a proper applicator brush or floor roller. Spread the sealer evenly, and allow it to dry overnight before proceeding.

    

4. It is time for polishing when your terrazzo floor dries. You can rent or buy a buffing machine from your local hardware store or online shopping. You will need to use a soft polishing pads which designed for polishing terrazzo tile. Choosing a light-colored pads to avoid staining the floor.    

    

5. Sprinkle amount of polishing powder onto the terrazzo tile, and then run the buffer across the entire terrazzo floor surface. The polishing powder will form into a muddy mixture which means that the powder is working into your terrazzo tile floor. Once most of the powder has been absorbed, turn off the buffer and remove it from the floor.

    

6. The last step is to clean up your floor with a clean damp mop. Remove any leftover polishing powder or muddy mixture. If you are not satisfied with the results, you can keep polishing until the floor has the desired level of shine.
