Application of metal bond in diamond tool manufacturing

At present, diamond tools can be divided into metal base, resin base and ceramic base according to the properties of the binder. Metal bonded diamond tools have become an important tool for grinding hard and brittle materials because of their high bonding strength, good formability and long service life, which can meet the requirements of high speed grinding and ultra-precision grinding technology.  

Metal bonded diamond tools have three preparation methods: firstly, sintered metal bonded diamond tools, which are widely used. Secondly, electroplated metal bonded diamond tools, which can only be used for grinding occasions with small load. Thirdly, single layer brazing metal bonded diamond tools, which are a new type of abrasive tools in research.

Sintered metal bonded diamond tools

Sintered metal bond is divided into cold pressing and hot pressing. Cold pressing has high pressure and long sintering time, while hot pressing has small pressure and short sintering time. Metal bonded diamond tools are mainly sintered by hot pressing. By sintering, the bonding agent and diamond form a mechanical clamping, chemical bonding or a combination of the two bonding modes. A large number of studies have shown that when bonding agent and diamond produce chemical bonding, diamond can be firmly held, not easy to fall off, so the grinding tools have higher grinding efficiency and service life.

There are five ways to improve the diamond holding power by bonding agent: 1. Adding strong carbide forming element; 2. Coating on the surface of diamond; 3. Adding rare earth element; 4. Pre-alloying metal bonding agent; 5. Adding low melting point metal to bonding agent.

Electroplated metal bonded diamond tools

Electroplated metal bonded diamond tools are usually plated with nickel or nickel alloy. The utility model has the advantages of simple process, less investment, convenient manufacture, no need of trimming, convenient use, working speed as high as 250-300m/s, long service life, etc. Moreover, electroplating is the only way to manufacture wheels with high accuracy. Therefore, electroplated grinding wheels occupy an undisputed leading position in high-speed and ultra high speed grinding.

Single-layer brazing metal bonded diamond tools

High temperature brazing technology can provide the best control ability for abrasive. Leading the pore structure into metal bonded diamond grinding wheel can improve its dressing sharpness and provide more chip space. Brazing metal bond can give full play to the advantages of diamond abrasive: the abrasive wears normally but does not fall off in the heavy-duty and high-efficiency grinding process of various materials; the wheel has high sharpness and large chip space; each abrasive has the best cutting load and is easy to realize the optimization of grinding parameters and the prediction of grinding results.
