The step by step procedure to obtain a polished concrete are:
1. The first step is to prepare the concrete surface by grinding. The concrete surface to be polished is prepared by removing the existing coatings over it. This can be performed by using a concrete diamond tooling of 16 to 20 grit. This must be the tool that is specifically used to remove coatings.
2. If cracks or joints are present on the concrete surface, it must be sealed by means of fillers (semi-grid) or epoxies.
3. Once sealed, the surface is grinding with the concrete grinding tools. The grit used can range from 30 to 50. Generally, the metal bond diamond grinding tools are used in this process. This is followed by a metal bond diamond grinding of 70 or 100 grit. Then go on with a 120 grit metal bond diamond.
4. After a series of grinding process, the surface is densified by applying a chemical hardener.
5. Polishing process is performed by means of resin bond diamond tools. And the grit varying from 100 to 200. Or a hybrid transitional diamond pad can also be used to reduce polishing progress time.
6. Next polishing is performed by a 400 grit followed by an 800 grit resin bond diamond.
7. The final finishing is performed by a 1500 or a 3000 grit resin bond diamond polishing pads.
8. In order to maintain the surface, a coat of stain guard over the concrete surface is recommended.
It should be noted that the different levels of grit values chosen depends on the smoothness and polish required by the owner for the concrete surface. There is another important procedure that cannot be ignored is the edges must be finished separately to the main concrete floor area because the large machines may bump and damage the walls if they are used too close. For the grinding process, an angle grinder is used having a diamond grinding cup wheel attached with a dust extraction shroud fitted to remove the dust. After the first two or three cuts, a different dust extraction shroud is used with a polisher or a multi speed grinder to polish the edge. Using the resin polishing pads to get the corners and edge smooth.
