Garage Floor Epoxy Coating
2018-10-12

What is?

One of the toughest and most durable finishes that you can apply to a garage floor today is an epoxy coating. Not only does it protect your garage floor, it can also instantly transform your boring or ugly cement into a professional looking floor of beauty and function.

An epoxy garage floor coating is not paint. Epoxy and paint are different products with different chemical compositions. Paint is a latex acrylic product while epoxy is an actual thermosetting resin that is applied as a coating. It is not problem that epoxy creates a tougher coating than paint.

How?

A good floor preparation is critical for a successful epoxy coating.

Before coating, you should inspect the garage floor, ensure the floor is clean, dry and free of serious cracks or damage.

Then, checking the moisture of the garage floor is necessary, which is a major cause of epoxy-coating failures. A concrete slab that has too much moisture content simply should not be covered with epoxy.

The best way to prepare the floor is to scuff it up using a diamond grinder. The grinder with diamond tools can prepare the concrete surface quickly and thoroughly.

After grinding and polishing, the garage floor has a smooth surface and epoxy bonds best. You should mix the two-part epoxy which consists of a catalyst and a resin before application. As soon as the epoxy mix is ready, start applying it. You will have no more than two hours to spread the epoxy, and even less time in hot weather. Keep the garage well ventilated. Don’t start walking on the new epoxy surface for at least 24 hours, and plan to wait at least several more days (about a week) before pulling the car back into the garage.
